My first job after my engineering degree was with ABB in Malmö. I worked there for three years, first as a thesis student and then as a development engineer. We developed the 800xA automation system, safety-certified as SIL2. I contributed to the evolution of an IDE for automation languages specified by IEC 61131-3, and got to learn about the safety standards IEC 61508 and IEC 61511. Since then I’ve been interested in the rigor required to develop software systems that can harm people.
